Distance Learning Schools, Learning From Home

Anyone can learn at home using a distance learning school. Just about every imaginable course under the sun can be studied, from law to cookery. Learning can be aimed at school, degree, professional or vocational level. Studying from home can be just for fun or it can lead to a qualification at the end of studying.

Many distant learning programs with a final qualification are accredited and recognised by professional bodies and employers. A large career jump can be realised by studying from home. There is also the immense feeling of satisfaction of passing a course and having a certificate presented.

Learning from home can be flexible. A student can learn at a pace that he or she is comfortable with; it all depends on an individual’s lifestyle and time available to study. For example, a mother with a young family may not wish to study for more than a few hours a week whereas someone freshly out from school with no family connections may wish to study for many hours per week. There are no costs involved in having to attend tutorials, which can be many miles away.

Distance learning can use many different media types. The most modern courses send out all their details online and are completely paperless. There may be courses that use CD’s, DVD’s or books as their learning media.

It is very simple to get started. Find the course that is suitable and pay any fees. Be assigned a tutor, receive the course materials. The tutor will introduce himself and that’s all there is to it. You’re up and running!

Courses vary in length and complexity. There are courses that last just a few weeks to courses that last a full year. A typical course will start with periods of study, followed by a set number of assignments and possibly an exam at the end of the study period. Students are assigned a tutor who will be contactable by email or phone. The student contacts the tutor with any learning difficulties. Often a course will have a self help section where students on the same course are able to discuss issues amongst themselves.

The UK’s Open University is one such distance learning school started by the British Government in the 1960’s. It was their belief that everyone should have a right to an education, whatever their background. Students from all over the world study with the Open University for many different qualifications, for example, Diplomas, Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Arts and Masters Degrees.
