The job market may be in a rut and in light of that one of the oldest and most dependable industries has seen a surge. With the military aggressively seeking new recruits and offering a wealth of benefits for those willing to enlist, the amount of new soldiers entering the service has surged. Increased recruitment efforts on behalf of military branches and the struggles associated with an uncertain economy have resulted in increased enlistment across the country. In Los Angeles, for instance, more than 2,300 soldiers have signed up for the Army over the past year, which shows an increase of 600 enlistees from the year before, according to a recent article in the Contra Costa Times.
As a result, many online colleges are reaching out to active-duty soldiers to help them reach their university degrees during their military service. For example, Ashford College has announced it will participate in this year’s Holiday Mail for Heroes Initiative, which is sponsored by the American Red Cross.
Administration and staff at the online university will create and collect personalized holiday cards that will be sent to active-duty soldiers on bases across the country, soldiers who are recovering in military hospitals, veterans and military families. Melissa Maddox, manager of the school’s military services, said Ashworth is participating in the program to honor “numerous service members, military spouses who are students and alumni.”
The programs offered in these online colleges are specially designed to focus on job-market skills that soldiers will need after they leave the service and begin seeking jobs. These programs put a direct focus on building the core skills that soldiers will need when it comes time for them to enter the workforce and begin life as civilians. The amount of additional credential that these programs can lend to a resume is invaluable for any soldier looking to begin a civilian career.
The university, which offers tuition assistance to current and former soldiers, is also approved by several programs that benefit military students, including those sponsored by the Department of Veterans Affairs and GoArmyEd.
Soldiers who receive credits from the American Council of Education or the DANTES Military Evaluations Program for their service may apply their merits to their chosen accredited degree in order to complete them in as little as six months.
An online degree can help soldiers who are returning home from duty improve their chances of gaining employment and adjust to the civilian lifestyle. Active-duty members of the military may take advantage of the colleges online offered by organizations to begin or accelerate their education while they serve.
